The moment you look at your partner and begin to speak, the room tends to fall away. That is why learning how to write wedding vows is not about finding the most poetic words. It is about choosing words that feel true to the two of you - the everyday kind of love, the laughter, the hard-won understanding and the promises you genuinely want to make.
Beautiful vows do not need to sound like a film script. In fact, the vows people remember most are often simple, specific and spoken with feeling. Whether you are marrying beside the water on the Central Coast, in the Hunter Valley, at a small Sydney gathering or in your own backyard, your vows can become one of the most personal parts of your ceremony.
Start with your relationship, not a blank page
A blank page can make anyone freeze. Rather than sitting down and trying to write a perfect speech from scratch, begin by collecting memories. Think about the beginning of your relationship, but do not stop there. The little moments often say more about a partnership than the big milestones.
Ask yourself what life looked like before you met your person, what shifted when they arrived, and what you now value because of them. Perhaps they are the one who makes a difficult week lighter, remembers exactly how you take your coffee, or encourages you to be braver than you thought possible. Perhaps your relationship has been built through distance, raising children, renovating a home, caring for family or simply choosing each other, day after day.
Write freely at first. No one else needs to read these notes. Jot down favourite memories, private jokes, qualities you admire and moments when you knew this was the person you wanted beside you. The purpose is not to use every detail. It is to find the heart of what you want to say.
Choose one or two stories with meaning
A short, well-chosen memory can make your vows feel wonderfully personal. It might be the first road trip where everything went wrong and you still laughed, the way they welcomed your family, or an ordinary Sunday that made you realise you were already home.
Choose stories that reveal something about your bond. Keep them brief enough that they support the promise rather than becoming the whole speech. If the story involves an inside joke, give your guests just enough context to understand why it matters, without explaining every detail.
Give your vows a simple shape
There is no single right way to structure wedding vows, but a gentle framework makes the writing process much easier. Think of your vows as a short conversation from the heart: what you love, what you have learned, and what you promise from here.
You might begin with a sentence about who your partner is to you. Then share a memory or reflection that captures your relationship. From there, move into the promises you want to make, before ending with a clear expression of your love and commitment.
That could sound like this in spirit: you made my world feel calmer and brighter; I have seen the care you bring to everyone you love; I promise to meet life with you as a team; I choose you, now and always. Your own wording should be yours, but this flow prevents the vows from feeling scattered.
Make promises you can live, not just say
The strongest promises are heartfelt and believable. Grand declarations have their place, but a vow is not a test of how dramatic you can be. It is a commitment you will carry into real life - on joyful holidays, during stressful weeks, through changes you cannot yet predict and in the quiet routines that make up a marriage.
Include promises that reflect your relationship. You may promise to listen with patience, to keep making space for adventures, to be honest even when it is difficult, to celebrate your partner's wins, or to make them tea when the day has been a lot. A little humour is welcome too, especially if it is part of how you love one another.
Try to balance the light-hearted with the lasting. A promise never to steal the doona may bring a smile, but it lands best alongside promises of care, loyalty and partnership.
How to write wedding vows without overthinking them
Many couples worry that their vows must be equally long, equally emotional or equally polished. They do not. You and your partner are different people, and your words will naturally reflect that. One of you may be a natural storyteller while the other says everything in a few sincere lines. Both can be deeply moving.
It does help, however, to agree on a few basics before you write. Decide whether you will share your vows with each other beforehand, whether you would like a similar length, and whether humour is welcome. Some couples prefer the lovely surprise of hearing every word for the first time during the ceremony. Others feel calmer knowing they have read them privately first. Neither choice is more romantic - it depends on what makes you both feel comfortable.
Aim for around one to two minutes each. This is usually enough time to say something meaningful without feeling as though you are delivering a speech. For most people, that is roughly 150 to 250 words, depending on how slowly they speak and how often they pause.
Write a first draft, then leave it for a day. When you return, look for sentences that sound like something you would actually say to your partner. Replace formal language with your natural voice. If you would never call them âmy dearest belovedâ over breakfast, you do not need to say it at the ceremony.
Let emotion be part of the moment
You do not have to deliver your vows perfectly for them to be perfect. Your voice may wobble. You may laugh at the wrong moment, need to take a breath, or cry before you reach the second sentence. These are not mistakes. They are signs that the words matter.
Practise reading your vows aloud a few times. You will quickly notice phrases that are difficult to say, sentences that go on too long, or places where you need to slow down. Practising also helps you become familiar with the words without taking away their meaning.
Print your final vows in a clear, easy-to-read font or write them in a small vow book. Avoid relying solely on your mobile. Ceremony nerves, low battery or patchy reception are unnecessary things to worry about. A physical copy gives you something steady to hold and becomes a keepsake after the day.

What to leave out of your vows
Honesty is at the centre of meaningful vows, but the ceremony is not the place to unpack every difficult chapter or air a disagreement. You can acknowledge the challenges you have overcome without sharing details that feel too private for your guests, or too raw for either of you.
It is also wise to avoid promises you cannot reasonably control, such as never making mistakes or ensuring every day will be easy. A more enduring vow might be to keep showing up, to communicate with kindness, or to face uncertainty together. These promises honour the reality of marriage while still feeling hopeful.
Finally, do not compare your vows to anyone else's. Social media can make it seem as though every couple has written a flawless, tear-filled masterpiece. Your vows only need to matter to the person standing in front of you.
The best words are rarely the fanciest ones. They are the words that let your partner hear, clearly and completely, that they are known, cherished and chosen. Give yourself permission to write from that place, take a breath when the moment arrives, and let your love story be heard in your own voice.
